Bio:

A future with words was always on the book for Elizabeth Ellen Carter who started writing her own stories when she ran out of Nancy Drew mysteries to read when she was 10.

Using her mother’s Olivetti type writer with the italic keyboard, she spent endless school holidays making up her own stories and then using the Dewey Decimal System to arrange and categorize her bookshelf.

Somewhere around the age of 13 she determined to become a journalist and at 17 was awarded a cadetship to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

She covered news, council, education, health but had the most fun as the paper’s entertainment and features reporter covering film, TV and music.

Best of all she met her husband there and together they started a small award-winning media, marketing and advertising agency and now she works as marketing manager for an international organic skin care company.

In 2012, Elizabeth also returned to the keyboard to write stories (and laptops are so much better than manual typewriters).

Her debut, Moonstone Obsession  was shortlisted for the 2013 Romance Writers Of Australia’s Emerald Awards for unpublished manuscripts.

Interivew with Author Shirleen Davies

I'm happy to share an interview with author Shirleen Davies as part of her blog tour for Reclaiming Love. This interview is via blogger MJ Austin Books.

What is your favorite part of the story in Reclaiming Love?

Julia Kerrigan’s struggle to decide whether she can trust Adam Monroe again and allow him back into her life and heart.

If you were stranded which of your characters do you want by your side?

Definitely Adam Monroe.

If you could be best friends with one of your characters, who would it be?

Julia Kerrigan, the female lead in Reclaiming Love.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I’d been penning short stories for years before I made the decision to become serious. Most of these were contemporary women’s fiction, some of which still lay in a box somewhere. I had already decided my first publishable book would be part of a series about four brothers and two cousins who came to adulthood a decade after the Civil War. Between the two of us, my husband and I have five sons. They are the inspiration for this series.

Who or what inspired you to be a writer?

There wasn’t one person or event. Writing was something I wanted to do for a long time—almost as if it was a force on its own, pushing me to put pen to paper.

What's your favorite book-turned movie?

Probably the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

What is your typical day like?

I usually spend about 3 or 4 hours writing. My goal is to write at least 1000 words per day. Many days I write 3000 plus words and others a few hundred. I have an aggressive publishing calendar, so I need to keep up with my stories. Plus, I truly enjoy writing.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

I take time away, research future book ideas, or work on another one of my writing projects until I’m able to move on with the current story. For my historicals, I have a wonderful set of books that highlight life in the Old West. When I’m stuck, I’ll often grab several of the books, find a quiet spot, and browse through them, making notes. It doesn’t take long to find renewed energy when I’m faced with so many ideas identified in these books.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Now that Reclaiming Love is out, I am working on book two, Our Kind of Love, which features Julia’s sister, Selena. I’m also in the middle of writing book four, Dixie Moon, in my historical western romance series, Redemption Mountain.

What book are you reading now?

I’m shifting between three right now: Let’s Get Visible, by David Gaughran, Reaper’s Stand, by Joanna Wylde, and re-reading Jackson Rule, by Dinah McCall.

What do you prefer paperback, hardcover, or ebooks?

eBooks. I use a Kindle and am a fast reader. When I travel, I no longer need to pack four or five books, I simply download them to my ereader and I’m off!

What advice would you give other authors?

Keep writing and don’t let anyone discourage you. When I started writing, I kept Churchill’s quote about Never Giving Up close at hand. Writers today have so many choices not available even ten years ago. These choices make it possible for anyone who truly loves to write to get their stories in front of readers.
